Description

Ann Miller's big film debut with MGM as she was brought in to replace Cyd Charise for this one. Her big number is "Shaking the blues away" where her yellow dress has a break-away or draw-string front simply to show her great legs. She is obviously wearing sheer black pantyhose. Notice the year this film was released (1948)! It is said that Ann Miller asked stocking maker Willy de Mond to make her extra long stockings already sewn attached to panties, as this is what they would do; have Women sewing her extra long stockings to her panties or leotard as she stood there wearing them. After being 'stuck' by so many pins each time, it makes perfect sense that she requested them made as a 1 piece ahead of time, especially to save time and pain when ever one pair became damaged during a dance routine..

At 15'20", women in pink mid-thigh to micros, pink hose dance in back of Fred Astaire. Naturally, he goes to check them out, especially a young Judy ("Wizard of Oz") Garland, who's initially not impressed by his spiel that would take her away from her "steady $15/week job." She eventually begins a song, when she sits one can see the fabric (on the DVD) -18'48". She wears hose in subsequent numbers, though probably stockings, usually at knee level, dress climbs only a few inches on spins and twirls, mostly on dance number -47'06".

Ann Miller starts showing off her "Shaking the Blues Away" number at 58', at 58'42" whipping off her long yellow skirt to reveal her sensational legs in black pantyhose, which shakes any blues we might have had right away...a 3'35" song and tap dance number (pics and vid).

At 1h09'57"+, group dance with a number of women in hose to mid-thigh and above. Garland at 1h11'20"+, this time her twirls takes her outfit to upper thighs. At 1h12'13", she's "replaced by woman in longer purple dress, nice side slit, black back-seamed hose, lots of right thigh. Then, JG's back with some black back-seamed of her own, new costume, twirls show mid-thigh, quirky undergarment cuts off views at mid-thigh, probably would if she's in stockings (to avoid showing the tops!). When she exits, only minor views of supporting dancers.
